Dare to Compare: Celene's Lesson Rates to Music Store Lessons

The cost at a store is on average $23.00 for a half hour lesson. Payment to instructor is typically $20.00 per HOUR, or $10 per lesson, and instructors are paid only if lessons are booked for that time. Educational requirements at studios vary. Many have no set standards for years of experience or educational background. As a consumer you need to ask about the education, qualifications, and years of experience which your instructor has. The price per lesson is the same regardless of instructor's credentials.

Most in-store lessons only offer drum set and snare drum.

Most in-store instructors do not have to submit a police screening.

Educated Instruction

Celene earned a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance degree, a four year program, from the University of Calgary in 2000. She began teaching in 1997, and continues to teach with passion and integrity privately, at schools, and as a clinician at camps.

Experience

During her 13 years of teaching, Celene has developed effective techniques which combine the use of teaching tools such as Kodaly method, traditional reading methods, and individualizes programs to best suit the needs of each student. Some of her best training as instructor came through teaching for over a decade at Royal Canadian Air Cadet Summer Training Centres, private instruction, and clinics. She has instructed Music Education students at the University of Calgary in Percussion Techniques, and teaches percussion ensembles at St. Francis High School, St. Alphonsus Junior High School, and is a member of the music team at Centennial High School.

Extensive Instrumentation

The degree program at the University of Calgary in Percussion included extensive training on classical percussion instruments including mallets (marimba, vibraphone, bells, orchestral bells, tubular bells), and percussion (tympani, multiple percussion, auxiliary percussion). In addition to her classical training, she has continued development on congas, drum set, and djembe, and continues to learn new instrumental traditions.

Celene's training is perfectly suited for those in band programs wishing to improve their percussion skills, drum set players wishing to expand their style knowledge, and those just starting out! Her passion is in sharing her love for music with those of all skill levels.

Security

Celene has a Calgary Police Service record check done regularly and is authorized to work in the Public, Private and Separate school districts.
